Muharram or the 'sacred month' is the first month of the Islamic or Hijri calendar. The tenth day of Muharram is called Ashura. Imam Husain (R) the grandson of the Holy Prophet (SM) was killed on this day at the hands of the troops of Yazid.Muharram has been observed since the 10th century AD. In Bengal also it has been observed for the last few centuries. The centre of observances of Muharram in Dhaka is the Husaini Dalan Imambara . The first day of Shawwal is Eid ul Fitr.Eid-ul-Fitr derives its name from the word Fitr - charity which is given at the end of Ramadan by all able Muslims. The main purpose of the Fitr is to provide those who fasted with the means of making up for their errors during the month of fasting. It is a day to seek forgiveness for one’s sins. Fasting on this day is forbidden. The Holy Prophet (Sall Allahu Alaihi wa Sallam) would always eat something sweet before proceeding on the Eid Ghah for Eid salat (Namaz). |

Although Buddhists regard every full moon as sacred, the moon of the month of Vaisakh (April - May) has special significance because on this day the Buddha was born, attained enlightenment, and attained Nirvana when he died. The Persian compound word, construed with shab , night, and barat , commission, means 'the night of commission or assignment', and is known in Arabic as Lailatul bara'at , meaning the night of emancipation. In the subcontinent, Shab-e-barat is observed as the night of good fortune. |
